Editor's RatingReviewed on April 30, 2018is one of those rare games that really captured the imagination of mobile gamers without actually doing anything new. Basically, Frogger with a more charming art style, the game was a hit for its publishers and spawned a host of imitators. It unquestionably should come as no surprise that the publisher would attempt to follow up its hit with something similar. Shooty Skies takes the same basic formula and twists it a bit with a release on both mobile devices and on.
The art style remains just as charming, though the game itself is definitely a bit more divisive than one might immediately think.Easy to play charming gameIf you've played Crossy Road, you already have a basic idea of what this game's going to look like. If you haven't played the other game, the plot of this one's still very easy to get.
You play as a colorful character who flies around the screen trying to avoid various obstacles. The difference in Shooty Skies is that it also allows the player to shoot back, with a set of controls that are based as much on rhythm and choice as it is on twitch skills.
Perhaps the most intriguing part of the game, though, is that much of the challenge and skill involved assumes that the player is using a mobile device.Reviewing this game should start with the good stuff, because there's a lot to like. Much like its predecessor, this game is almost obnoxiously charming. The art style is great for the genre, even if you wouldn't immediately think it's a good fit. The controls are also fairly unique, putting a huge element of strategy into the game.

Because you aren't meant to move, power up your shots, and fire at the same time, you'll constantly be making trade-offs. Your progression in the game is going to be tied to your skill in manipulating its systems, which is fantastic. Mobile port but fun in short burstsThe downsides of the game mostly come from it being a mobile port. This game loses a lot of its charms when it isn't played with touch controls, even if it's still serviceable when played through Steam. Playing it on a PC also allows you to play the game much longer than most tend to play it on mobile devices, helping most players to realize that the game is relatively shallow.
If you try to play for more than just a short burst, you'll start to get a bit bored with the presentation. Is Shooty Skies the next Crossy Road? Probably not. It's a nice, free infinite shooter that doesn't do much to offend, so you'll have a good time when you play it. Don't expect it to be as addictive on the PC as it is on the phone, though, and try to pace yourself as you play. It's good for short bursts of entertainment between more substantial games, if nothing else. Consider this one when you just want to play something pleasant that won't tax your brain or your reflexes too much.
